Contains 52 black and white photographs, many annotated with titles/descriptions on the reverse. These images are predominantly of places (including general scenes and images of specific streets; buildings; institutions; monuments; signage) and events within the area which is now the London Borough of Tower Hamlets (the former boroughs of Poplar, Bethnal Green and Stepney). However, they also include a couple of photographs of other places which are within London but outside of the borough, for instance, images of Trafalgar Square and The Old Curiosity Shop (Portsmouth St) in the City of Westminster.
Images within the area of Tower Hamlets include photographs of: The Three Mills (Bromley-by-Bow); signage of businesses in Poplar (e.g. the boar's head and the white horse, High St, Poplar); the Aldgate Pump; Aldgate Haymarket; Grosvenor Buildings (Manity St); various streets and buildings in Limehouse (including the Harbour Master's House) and Stepney Green (e.g. Trinity Almshouses, Mile End Road); London Docks; Millwall Docks; Shadwell (e.g. the old Fish Market, the King Edward VII Park site and also its official opening by King George V in 1922); Poplar Town Hall; St Matthias Church, Poplar; The Turk's Head pub (Wapping High Street); Tower Hill; The Royal Mint; The Tower of London.
There are markings on some of the photographs so these may have been reproduced/used for display at some point. |
