Contains ten images of bomb damage in Poplar (three black and white photographs; seven sepia postcards) by the renowned East End photographer, William Whiffin.
The photographs are of war damage to Devitt House, in Wades Place and Grosvenor Buildings, at the corner of Cotton Street and Manistry Street. These photographs are of damage sustained during the Second World War, (as confirmed by cross-referencing the images with other photographic records within Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives). There is also one photograph of the war memorial (in Poplar Recreation Ground) for the victims of the Upper North Street School air raid bombing in June 1917.
The postcards have printed titles on the images themselves which clarify that they are scenes of damage caused by Zeppelin air raids in the East End of London during the First World War. On the reverse of the postcards there are remnants of cardboard, perhaps from previous usage of the images for displays etc. |
