At the front: loose, photocopied document about the Charity Commission scheme for the regulation of the James Cook, Alice Row and Thomas Daplyn charities and the charity Stepney Relief Society Fund (Mile End Old Town Branch), dated 25 April 1977 and their amalgamation to be managed together as the Stepney Relief in Need Charity.
Also contains a Charity Commission order and schedule for the charities of James Cook, Dame Alice Row and Thomas Daplyn dated June 1885 with later annotations dated 1943 and 1960-70 and a loose poster advertising Hamlet of Mile End Old Town Charities and providing information to applicants, dated 24 November 1939.
This is proceeded by minutes of meetings of the Trustees for the Administration of the Charities of Captain James Cook, Dame Alice Row and Thomas Daplyn (and also sometimes of the administration of Codill Hall and what is referred to as 'General Charities') dated 22 December 1885 - 25 February 1943. Meetings were held in the Guardians' offices, on Bancroft Road, a name change to 'Meeting of the Trustees of the Mile End Old Town Charities' is evident from the meeting held on 13 December 1918 onwards. From 6 October 1921 meetings were held in the Rectory [later referred to as Stepney Rectory], White Horse Lane or in St George's Town Hall. The last minutes are loose, typed pages (rather than handwritten like the previous minutes) and the meeting is referred to as 'a meeting of the Trustees of the Mile End Old Town Charities: Cooks' Row & Daplyn Branch', these minutes were signed on 15 April 1943.
The minutes contains lists of applicants (names and addresses) who received funding, in the earlier meetings the ages of applicants is also recorded. Where ages of the applicants were included it is evident they are adults and most of these persons receiving funding were over the age of fifty, although a small amount were in their thirties or forties. |
