Includes one photograph of the Benkovitch family: Standing from left: Hyman (b1882) with his wife Janey nee Charnofsky (b1880), Sarah (b1888), Rebecca (who was to marry Louis Tuffel and become the mother of Charles Tuffel) (b1896), Isaac (b1893) Seated from left: Hyman and Janey's daughter Rebecca (b1906), Ann (b1862), Harriet (b1902), Joseph (b1864), Woolf (b1885). The family arrived in the UK sometime between 1896 and 1900 from Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. Joseph ran a Hebrew school and, later, was on the Board of the Old Castle Street Synagogue. Their family home was for many years in Grimsby Street, Bethnal Green. Ann died in 1918, a victim of the Spanish flu epidemic. |
