DescriptionLast Will and Testament of 'William Henry Gingell of the Kent and Essex Yard High Street Whitechapel in the Country of Middlesex and of Fernside, Wandsworth Common in the County of Surrey Hay Factor'. The Will is dated 22 March 1895, with Codicil dated 2 July 1895. The front cover is annotated in pencil with the text 'March 22/95'.

William appoints his wife [according to other sources this was Mary Gingell, although she is not named in the document], his nephew James Alexander Cruickshank, and the solicitor Thomas Baddeley (of 60 Leadenhall Street, London) as Executors and Trustees of his Will. Key aspects of the Will include his wishes to be buried at the Cemetery at Wandsworth and that his business premises (i.e. the Kent and Essex Yard, High Street, Whitechapel) should be given to his nephew and business partner James Alexander Cruickshank. There is also reference made to freehold wharf and premises in Wapping and to the leasehold messuage and premises at 8 Leyland Road, Lee, Kent [now in Lewisham, London]. There are many beneficiaries listed in his Will including a range of charitable legacies, the following three legacies relate to Tower Hamlets:

London Hospital - £1000
Eastern Dispensary in Leman Street, Whitechapel - £100
Victoria Park Hospital for diseases of the chest - £300

The codicil extends the period which the Trustees have to sell the leasehold estate 'Fernside', Wandsworth Common (and the freehold land adjoining it), from 12 months to 3 years.
