On the video jacket:
'The spirit and tradition of Somali culture is explored in this, the first video about the Somali community in London, produced for Oxford House during the annual Somali Festival.

There are some 30,000 Somalis living in the UK, (the largest refugee population in Europe). Many fled the recent civil war, having suffered traumatic experiences, bereavement and loss and are now experiencing practical and cultural difficulties in adapting to life in Britain. They are to a great extent an invisible community and are neglected by the country at large.

The video combines people talking in English about their lives, culture and contemporary experience, with footage of Somali dance, poetry and song. It shows the vitality of the oral tradition and its importance as a voice for the community.
This video aims to introduce the wider public to Somali culture and people and is especially useful for educational and cultural groups. It forms part of the Somali Lives Exhibition produced by The Workshop at Oxford House. For more information on the video or The Workshop contact;
