| Description | July 16th Travels to Hull. Goes aboard "S.s. Elderado' and sets off on journey.
July 18th Enters Fjord for Stevanger. Visits town of Stevanger and describes its cathedral. At 6.30 starts for Bergen, sees Lighthouse on Island of Hoitwgse. Goes across Bukken Fjord, passes towns of Skudeshaun, Kopervik, Haugesmud. Describes Haraldshang. Goes past Mosterhavn on the Mostera.
Bergen comes into sight. Lands at its Custom House after a journey of 100 miles that took eight hours.
Visits the town of Bergen.
July 19th Goes on board the "S.s. Lyderkow". Passes through Koss Fjord and Bjorne Fjord that goes through to Godøsuend. Stops at a little village called Eide. Steams down Sör Fjord. Stops at village called Odde for the night.
July 20th Lands at Eide. Describes waterfalls known as the Sevle Fos and the Stalheims Fos. Goes to Bolstads Fjord.
July 2lst Arrives in town of Vossevaugeu. Describes Vossevaugeu's church and its congregation.
Describes the dress of the women in the church. Describes these women "sliding or Tobogganing".
July 22nd Takes train from Vossevaugeu to Bergen. Describes his train journey. Arrives at Bergen and takes baggage to "S.S. Sirius" bound for the North Cape. Visits the Hanseatic museum on the German quay. Goes to the town museum. Goes back on board "S.s. Sirius" and starts journey.
July 23rd Ship stops at Moldoeu to pick up a passenger. Ship goes round Island of Bremanger, through Ulve sound of the east side of the Island of Vaagsö and goes to Island of Kvamso and on to Aglesund.
Ship gets underway again passes Island of Valderõ and Vallerö. Arrives at Molde. Takes steamboat "Ramuma" and steams across Molde Fjord. Goes around Islands of Vestnoes and Säkkue and enters Romsdal Fjord. Sights the Laupareu Mountains. Visits village of Nordvick. Sees town of Veblewguxs with the mountain Romsdalshou behind it. Stops off at Naes.
July 24th Starts a long drive with companions in a one horse Norwegian trap to Lillehammer. He soon enters the gorge Romsdal, changes horses at Horgheim. Arrives at Flatmark station situated between Romsdal and Gudbrausdal and stays there overnight.
July 25th Arrives in Oriueim. Arrives at fourth station at Huefloteu. Arrives at fifth station at Malweu.
Arrives at sixth station at Lesjeverk. Arives at seventh station at Nolsoet. Arrives at Eighth station at Holaker. Arrives at ninth station at Domaas or Dombaas and stays here overnight.
July 26th Starts off again at 8 am. Tenth Station is Toftemoen. Goes past a "tremendous" ravine called Laagan. Eleventh station is in Broendhougen. Twelfth station is in Lourgard. Thirteenth station is Moeu i Sel. Goes past monument to defeat of British force in 1612. Fourteenth station is in Bredevaugeu and stays overnight here.
July 27th Sets off on journey once more. Describes a new district prison. Fifteenth station is Storklevestad. Passes obelisk that is a memorial to the memory of a Captain Sinclair killed on August 12th 1612. Sixteenth station is Moen i Sötorp. Seventeenth station is in Listad. Eighteenth station is situated in Skaggestad. Nineteenth station is in Kirkesteun and Twentieth station is in Holmen i Tretton. The twenty first station is in Fossegaarden and finally arrives at the twenty -second and last station Lillehammer. Goes to the Victoria Hotel located in the centre of Lillehammer and arrives there at 7.45 pm. So ends his journey with companions in a Norwegian trap, which lasted for three days and included twenty-one stops to change the horse.
July 28th Goes to parish church and attends service.
July 29th Goes aboard the "S.S. Eidswold". Travels down Lake Njøseu? Stops at Freugstueu, Bire, Ringsaker, Heggenhaurgen, Gio, Smørvik, Noes and Storehammer. Arives at town of Hamar and stops briefly. Ship then stops at Gillumd[?], Fjeldhoug, Stigersaud and Ekoruholm. Ship enters the Vormen River and arrives at Eidsvold. Goes aboard train there to Christiania and when he arrives he goes to Hotel in Karl- Johanus-Gade. Takes a walk to the Tivoli Gardens.
July 30th Takes carriage to St. Johns Hill - St. Haushagen. Drives to back of University to see great Viking ship which was discovered in a mound near a small town "and watering place" called Sandeford. The mound had been known as Kougshaugeu (the Kings mound). Describes in detail the dig and what was found in the mound. Takes a boat across the Fjord and walks up to Oscarshall, a building built in 1849- 1852. Describes a group of ancient buildings of wood that have been reconstructed. Goes aboard "S.S. Oscar Dickson" which pulls away at l1pm.
July 31st Strømstad a little town on the Swedish coast. Goes through a narrow channel called Harsteusund, which is between the mainland and the islands. Goes past numerous islands "from mere rock to l mile long". Also goes past Frellbacka, Smógen, Grafverbla, Taugeu and arrives at Malmo at llam. Goes on to Lysekil and goes ashore there for an hour. Passes various little islands. Comes to a fishing town called Mollösund. Describes work going on there. Later comes to Marstrand which is on a small island. The island lies at the mouth of the Gotta Elo which is the River which leads to Gottënburg. Goes up the river to a jetty called Skeppsbro. "distance from Christina to Gottënburg is 201 miles and thousands of rocky islands are past". Takes omnibus to Göta Källare Hotel in Sodra Hammgatan[?]
August lst Visits Göteborg Museum, describes it being situated "in the building formerly belonging to the old East India Company." In the evening goes to Kings-Parkeu, Trädgrads Foreniugeu[?] Gardens. Walks around the town. Makes reference to great improvements made. Visits the English Church in Rosenlunde Gatan. Goes to the Sailors Institute. Makes reference to "a great increase in business since I was here 25 years ago".
August 2nd Walks around town and says that he "could see the effect of the Railways". Speaks of the lack of a national dress believing that railways are responsible for this.
August 3rd Leaves Göteburg by express train for Copenhagen. Describes the litle village of Lindome and its church. Passes the village of Armas. Stops at Varburg and at Halmstad where he stays for dinner. Goes on to Engleholm and then Helsingburg which is the end of the train journey. Steams across to Elismore and then walks to railway station and goes on board train. Passes the Palace of Fredericksburg. Arrives in Copenhagen and takes tramcar to Hotel Konis af Danmark.
August 4th Visits St. Albans church and attends service. Takes steam train car to Hellerup, on the way there he describes passing an "extraordinary" method of advertising- a large brewery had erected a 60 foot high model of a bottle of beer which had a staircase inside which led up to a platform.
August 5th Boards train for Rosenberg to see palace built by Indigo Jones and then returns.
August 6th Visits fruit and vegetable market. In the afternoon he goes to the Museum of Northern Antiquities. This was his second visit as he describes seeing it two years ago. He describes in great detail contents of the Museum. Draws diagrams of the various exhibits including Iron Age and Bronze Age pots and a necklace and an ancient plough. |
