The Development Committee began in June 1971 when a new committee structure was introduced across the Council. The work of this committee was concerned with all aspects of land use in the borough - its purchase, management, improvement and disposal. There are reports on individual properties, buildings (e.g. Christchurch Spitalfields, Wilton's Music Hall), listed buildings and conservation areas, Queen Mary University London (QMUL) in Mile End, development, planning applications compulsory purchase orders and reports received from the Director of Development.
For example, the meeting held 20 February 1975 (L/THL/A/30/1/4) included a letter, leaflet and briefing for the Chile Solidarity Campaign request to use East London Maternity Hospital to house refugees. This meeting also considered Tower Hamlets Comprehensive Development Areas: Stepney-Poplar, North-West Stepney and West Bethnal Green.
The minutes of the Community Land Sub-Committee of the Development Committee May 1976-October 1978 provide information of developments arising from the 1975 Community Land Act and concerns the development of certain named sites, e.g. Cannon and Continental Wharf, St Katherine's Way, 15-23 Osborn Street and 9-25 Camperdown Street.
