AdminHistoryThe Bethnal Green Tube Disaster occurred on 3 Mar 1943 when 173 people suffocated to death entering Bethnal Green underground station, which had been adapted as an air raid shelter. A fund was established to provide assistance to survivors of the disaster and in March 1944 a trust was created to administer the fund known as the Tube Shelter Accident Fund. Administrative support to the Trustees was provided by the Bethnal Green Borough Council. All beneficiaries of the Fund had been paid by 1963 and the Trust was concluded.
