The East End Community School was opened on 17 June 1977 following recognition by educationalists Mr Huque and his wife Mrs Anwara Begum Huque for the need for a supplementary school for Bengali speaking children in the area, and concern from parents regarding their children's religious and cultural education. At the time, Inner London Educational Authority schools in East London did not teach Bengali language and religion. The school was set up by Mr and Mrs Huque who worked as voluntary teachers, alongside a mangement committee comprised of local parents. The curriculum included Bengali and English language and literature, religious instruction, and arts and crafts. The school was intially run at the expense of the committee, but later receieved grants from the Spitalfields Project. |
