| Description | Records relating to the estates of Thomas Rumbold (c. 1807-1872) and his son Edwin Rumbold (c. 1833-1889). Thomas Rumbold's family business was based at High Street and Short Street, Shadwell. Edwin carried on the business following the death of his father in 1872, by the time of his own death in 1889 an auctioneer's office confirms that the business had been operating for over 50 years. James Jabez Chalk and his brother Seymour William Chalk both acted as executors to the Rumbold family, to Thomas Rumbold and Edwin Rumbold respectively. The records confirm that there was an additional personal connection between the Chalk family and the Rumbolds as James Jabez and Seymour William were married to daughters of Thomas Rumbold.
Within records dated November 1878 Mrs Sarah Rumbold, James Jabez Chalk and John Atherton are listed as the executors of Thomas Rumbold's estate. Subsequently, when Thomas Rumbold's widow, Sarah Rumbold, died on 30 September 1881, James Jabez Chalk and John Atherton became the remaining two executors. Other Inland Revenue documentation from 1882 states that the children of Thomas Rumbold at that time were: Edwin Rumbold; Emily Sarah Chalk (wife of James Jabez Chalk); Mary Ann Chalk (wife of Seymour William Chalk); Elizabeth Rumbold; Thomas James Rumbold; William John Rumbold.
