May 6th (Cont'd) Makes reference to staying in the same hotel he stayed at in 1882. Takes walk along the via Ugo Barri. Walks into via Dell Independensia and makes a reference to what the street was like when he was last here. The town is walled, entry is by 12 gates and a guard of soldiers is on each gate.
May 7th Goes to see two leaning Towers. One is called the Garisenda Tower the other is called the Asinalle Tower. Walks down via Castiglione and vists the Bibloteca Communale. Goes to the Museo Civico, visits numerous Roman alters and Etruscan tombs. Walks across the Piazzo Vittorio Emanuele and describes scene of 20 hats flying in the air due to the wind and their owners giving chase. Goes to the Cathedral of St. Peter. Leaves by train for Milano stopping briefly at Modena. Arrives in Milano and goes to the Hotel del' Europe.
May 8th Goes to Church in Via Audgari, part of the Grand Hotel de Milan. Visits Duomoor Cathedral and Tomb of St. Borromeo
May 9th Visits Museo Civico. In afternoon drives to Ampitheatre built in 1804. Looks around Arsenal and then drives around the city via the Margin of the Old Nabiglio Canal. Speaks of improvments made since last time he was here.
May 10th Starts journey at 10.15 am. north by Train arriving in Lucerne by 6.50pm. Goes to the Swan Hotel where he stayed 18 months before. Suffers another attack of pains in his chest.
May 11th Takes trip on steamer for Fluelen. Steamer crosses Lake Kissnacht. Sees numerous villages on his passage across to Fluelen.
May 12th Takes train to Paris.
May 13th Visits noted places in Paris. Goes to the grand Museum of the Louvre.
May 14th Arrives back in London. |
