March 16th (cont'd) Stops at Medjez Amar which was previously a fortified camp. Goes through Duvivier Junction, Souk Arras, Ghrardimaou, Beja-Gare "A great Roman Aquaduct", Manozzha, and finally arrives in Tunis and goes to the Grand Hotel. Arrives at his hotel after a journey of 19 hours.
March 17th Visits schools. Describes Mistress of the girls school. Takes a walk down the Rue de la Marine to the lake of Tunis also known as El Bahira.
March 18th Goes through the Arab Town. Describes the making of a Fez. Takes Tram Car up the Rue de Maltais, Rue Carthhagira, Rue bab Souika and Rue d' Alfa. Describes seeing a snake charmer. Takes tram car down to the Docks.
March 19th Goes to St. Augustines Church (The English Church) in the Rue De Espagna. Goes to the old Protestant Cemetary in the Rue des Protestants. Sees Memorial to John Howard Payne who wrote the ballad "Home, Sweet Home"
March 20th Goes to St. Augustines Church. Walks around Countryside.
March 21lst His Birthday. Leaves from Rubatine Railway station for Goulette. Goes to canal (Lake of Tunis). Goes into Town. Takes carriage to ruins of Carthage. Drives to the front of the Cathedral of St.
Louis. Describes the great cisterns which supply Goletta with water "they are of great antiquity", Goes to the Museum at the rear of St. Louis Cathedral. He meets there "the great and learned explorer and
archaeologist- Reverend Pere Delattre." Describes the contents of the Museum. Purchases some old coins, a piece of Punic pottery and a Punic lamp. Drives to the Great Basilica. Visits the Amphitheatre and Punic cemetery. Drives back to Goletta and then takes train back to Tunis.
March 22nd Visits the Palace of the Dey or Bey. Later he goes for a walk to the South East end of the City.
March 23rd Walks through Arab quarter. Visits the "Great Fortress Palace of Bardo". Visits the Museum that is within the fortress.
March 24th Takes train from Algier railway station for Hamman[?] lip. Arrives there and sees the old palace of the Bey. Ascends mountain path on a Donkey which takes two hers. Leaves again by train and arrives back at hotel at 6.30 pm "somewhat tired"
March 25th Visits the Bazaars. Then later he visits the schools run by RevJ. Flad. Describes an Arab funeral.
March 26th Goes to the centre of the Arab quarter. Visits the burial place of the Beys of Tunis then visits "Arab quarter of the upper classes". Goes to the Jewish quarter. Describes the dress of four ladies and two girls who he sees. Describes the fruit and vegatables he sees in a Arab green-grocers.
March 27th Goes to St. Augustines
March 28th Takes train for Golette[?] Goes on board a steam launch which nearly sinks and then goes on board Ship "the Ville de Rome". Rounds Cape Bou.
March 29th Sees the Island of Gozo. Next he comes to Comino island and then island of Malta. Enters the Grand Harbour on the South side of Valletta. Goes to the Imperial hotel. Takes a walk up the Strada Reale to Mesrs. Cooks and son. Describes seventy pits which are used to store grain in case of blockade.
Describes the dress of Maltese Women. Walks around town and goes back to hotel.
March 30th Visits the Palace where the Governor resides. Sees the state carriage and Armoury which has many items which have a connection with the Knights of St. John. Also sees the Council Chamber. Visits the Chief secretary Mr Baden -Powell. Goes to the Great Harbour. Sees the Capauchin Convent and a Cricket pitch.
March 31st Goes to Fort St. Elmo, HQ of the Royal Artillery. Describes the Small Chapel in the Fort which is only viewed by special order. Goes to a Civil Hospital for Incurables, a orphan asylum for Boys and Girls and a a infant school. Walks up Strad Mercanti to Palazzo Parisi a large building which had been occupied by Napolean and now being used as a Post Office. Goes to Roman Catholic Church of Vittoria "the oldest Church in Malta".
April lst Goes to the Church of St. Giovanni also known as Church of St. John the Baptist. Describes the singing of the men and boys like that of a Whitechapel Costermonger. Visits the public library. Looks at the Libraries collection of Antiquities which have all been found in Malta. Goes to the Phoenican ruins at Hagiar Kim (Stones of Worship). Describes and draws the Temple of Hagiar Kim. Walks across to another group of Phoenician ruins which are called Mnaidra (the Sheepfold). Describes and draws Temple of Mnaidra. The ruins are nearly opposite the Island of Filfla[?].
April 2nd Collects an order to inspect the Dockyard and Arsenal. Goes to the Palace to look at Old Clock which has an elaborate face.
April 3rd Attends service at St. Paul's church.
April 4th Goes to the Museum at the free Library to look at Earthernware coffin discovered in 1797. Examines and draws stone altar.
April 5th Storms.
April 6th Visits Dockyard calls upon an Admiral Tracey. Sights the "S.S. Victoria" an armour plated ship. Goes on board this ship which is in drydock and undergoing repairs. Goes into the conning tower. Examines the communications system. Later goes to St. Pauls Bay. Arrives in Musta and pulls up at Church. It has "the 3rd largest dome in Europe". Describes some ruins which were found here in 1879 and which may be connected to St. Paul which were found on the land that was called Ta-Beu- Marrat.
April 7th Takes a boat to Slima. In aftermoon took train to Citta Vecchia (the Old City) also called notable by the Maltese. Several houses here date from 1510 -1530. Visits Citadel and Magisterial Palace and goes into the town of Ruhato. Goes to Church of St. Publio then goes to Grotto where St. Paul was suppose to have lived for 3 months. Visits Catacombs and Museum on the Camp grounds.
April 8th Goes to visit ruins along the Citta Vecchia road but cannot find them. Goes to the prisons which are two and a half miles from Valleta. Goes to quaratine harbour through Pieta to Steinna then goes along St John's Bay to Dragonara House. Goes to Pembroke camp where a Highland regiment is now based. On trip back passes fountain and valve of Wigna Courts Aquaduct. It has a fountain from which Horses can drink.
April 9th Goes to the Roman Catholic Cemetery which is just beyond the village of Lucca. Visits Cemetery Chapel. Goes to the Gardens of San Antonio (the Governor's summer residence). Visits the Bone Chapel (Charnel House) which is the Hospital for Incurables located at the bottom of the Strada Mercanti. Bones have been rearranged in a decorative way including those of bones of men killed by Turks in 1565.
