August 6th (Cont'd) Draws diagram of barrow, and ancient sword. Goes to Admiralgarde to see ancient watch tower (built 1591) and draws a diagram of this. August 7th Visits Ethnological Museum, draws a Greenland House. Goes to Rosenborg Slot which is the palace of King Frederick IV and draws King Frederick's writing desk. August 8th Takes train to Korseor. Boards ferry which goes across to Nybury. Goes onboard "S.S. Princess Sophia Augusta". Goes into town near Kieler Hafen "very great alterations had been made since I paid my first visit 25 years since." Takes train for Hamburg. August 9th Goes to St. Nicholas church and then on to market where he describes Verdlander women and their dress. Goes to a woman selling eels and draws a picture of a woman in the process of skinning eels. Takes a steamboat to the end of the Alstar and back. On return he takes a coach to the railway station passing some half-timbered houses which range in date from 1510-1625. Describes houses next to the Elbe as very picturesque. Boards mail train for Hanover and arrives there in the late evening. August 10th Goes to find Emma Fehler his God-daughter. Walks through the City of Hanover. Describes seeing a German hut of 3-400 years old which has been reconstructed. August 11th Takes tram to Hildersheim, "the most remarkable Town I was ever in". No building in the town was built after 1670. Diagram of Knochenhaueranitshaus which is a building dating from 1527. Goes to the Dome Kirke erected between 1055 and 1061. Describes a Rose tree that is suppose to have been growing there for more then a thousand years. Leaves by train back to Hanover. August 12th Goes to visit new Museum that has been built in the park in Frederick Strasse. Takes train to Calais. Goes through towns of Muideu and Lohue and Fortress of Hamm then arrives in town of Cologne. Leaves Cologne in evening and arrives in the early morning in Brussels. August 13th Still on board train. Goes through Enghen, Tournai, Lille and at 12.39 p.m he arrives in Calais. Leaves by the "Victoria" steamer for Dover where he arrives at 3.20 p.m. Goes to the King's Head hotel to stay. August 20th Takes train and arrives home in Dock Street. |
