| AdminHistory | Parmiter's Bethnal Green Educational Fund (PBGEF) was a Registered Charity (1093527). The Fund originated from Parmiter's Foundation, which arose from a charitable gift in the 1681 Will of Thomas Parmiter, a silk merchant who lived in Bethnal Green. The Will made provision for 'Six almshouses in some convenient place upon the waste of Bethnal Green and further, for the building there of one free schoolhouse or room wherein ten poor children of the Hamlet of Bethnal Green may be taught to read and write'.
The first Parmiter's School and almshouses were opened off Brick Lane in 1722. The school moved to larger premises in Parmiter Street in 1839 and moved again in 1887 to Approach Road. In 1977 Parmiter's School moved to Garston in Hertfordshire and the building in Approach Road was part of Raines School until 2020 and is now part of Oaklands School.
The Parmiter's Bethnal Green Educational Fund was developed from 1977 to promote education in Bethnal Green (the area of the old Metropolitan Borough), specifically to provide grants for students under the age of 25, who were in financial need, to be able to pursue their studies and training, in accordance with the Will of Thomas Parmiter.
Parmiter's projects have included:
-Book Grants for Bethnal Green students going on to Higher Education to assist with the cost of books for their courses (since 1998)
-'A book for you' - Book tokens presented every year (since 2003) to year 2 children in Bethnal Green Primary Schools so each child can choose their own book at the book fair
-'Educational Experience' Grants for Bethnal Green Primary Schools (since 2018; on hold during covid pandemic).
