| Description | Untitled volume containing annual lists of names, amounts (and sometimes addresses) dating from 1931-1974. The volume also contains some loose material dating from 1969-1970.
The later records in the volume (1969-1974) generally include lists of J. J. and S. W. Chalk staff and a note of specific types of alcoholic drinks alongside the names. The loose material consists of handwritten lists, including several pages of names entitled 'Blotters 1969' and 'Blotters 1970', a list entitled 'Drinks' and lists of types and quantities of drinks, chocolates and cigarettes.
The volume's usage is difficult to establish for certain and it may have been used for a range of purposes. It seems likely, however, that the at least some of the records relate to annual (possibly Christmas) gifts given by J. J. and S. W. Chalk to their staff, contractors, colleagues, customers and others providing regular services to the firm (e.g. postman, Stepney Service Station etc). Some of the records may also relate to contributions towards such gifts. |
