| Description | Four colour plans relating to the reconstruction of Poplar Methodist Church in the early 1930s. The plans were created by Gunton and Gunton architects (Empire House, St. Martin's le Grand, London E.C.1), in November 1932.
In the early 1930s the Poplar Methodist Church building underwent major reconstruction, the contractors for this renovation work were George Parker and Son of Peckham, under the direction of Josiah Gunton's architectural firm, Gunton and Gunton. Josiah Gunton had previously overseen the restoration of parts of the church in 1910, this work included the addition of a rostrum, choir pews and an orchestra platform. The pinnacles of the church were also trimmed off the building in approximately the mid - late 1920s. However, the renovations of 1933 were much more significant than any of these previous renovation works and therefore constituted the first major building work carried out on the church since it was built in 1848.
Reconstruction work began in January 1933 and the newly refurbished church re-opened at the end of September 1933. |
