| Description | A grey sketchbook. The book is bound with board and leather and is approximately thirty two centimetres tall by twenty wide. The pages are all the wrong way up, with the page number upside-down in the bottom right-hand corner. There are also many loose pages inside, and some of the sketches and paintings have been pasted into the book from elsewhere. As with P/MCC/1/1, most of the sketches within the book are of a religious nature.
There are paintings on pages 18, 20, 30, 32, 58, 74, 84, 96, 110, 116, 126, 138, 146, 152, 154, 160, 164 and 172. There are also partially painted pictures on pages 24, 38, 70, 86, 88, 90, 92, 98 and 186. There are many sketches on loose paper at the very back of the book, some of which appear to have been drawn on the back of military administrative documents from McCarthy's period of National Service. There is also a folded Catholic newspaper, 'Fatima's Findings', inserted between pages 160 and 161.
As with P/MCC/1/1 there are purple bookmarks indicating that Mick Paige was McCarthy's model for the sketches on pages 196, 122 and 64. There is also a final purple bookmark with the notation 'Sitting Room at 12 Damascus', however the pages it relates to are among those which are missing.
Number of Sketches: 89 |
| PhysicalDescription | Condition: P/MCC/1/2 is in far poorer condition than P/MCC/1/1. The spine of the sketchbook is coming apart and the pages are generally much more ragged. Page 23/24 in particular is close to being torn away from the book completely, and page 171/172 is no longer attached to the spine. In addition, pages 1 - 15, 21 - 22, 26 - 28, 43 - 44, 49 - 52, 65 - 66, 75 - 76, 81 - 82, 99 - 100, 123 - 124, 131 - 132, 155 - 158, 165 - 166, 173 - 180, 189 - 190 and 197 - 198 are missing. |
