| Date(s) | 1954 |
| Description | A light beige sketchbook. The book is bound with board and leather and is approximately thirty two centimetres tall by twenty wide. Most of the sketches have been drawn in pencil, although there are several inks and even a few oil and watercolour paintings. The majority of the pictures are of a religious nature, with many being of the Virgin Mary.
There are paintings on page 8, 14, 54, 82, 88, 92, 98, 106, 116, 124, 130, 132, 144, 156, 160 and 190. The pictures on pages 42, 44, 140, 142, 180, 194, 196 are partially painted. Some of the pages have been bookmarked to indicate who modelled for the portraits, with 18 being Dan Harris, 92 and 118 being Frank Wyatt, 112 and 195 being Mick Paige and 190 being Paul Joyce.

| PhysicalDescription | Condition: Mostly good, although there are certain issues one must be aware of. Pages 24 - 27 are in danger of being torn off due to a cut which runs close to the spine of the book. Page 66 is also coming away from the spine. Not unexpectedly there are also signs of pencil smudging and paint droplets on certain pages, a factor mitigated by McCarthy's tendency to leave certain pages blank.
Sixteen pages from the alphabetised section at the beginning of the book have been torn out, comprising the pages B - D, I - K and M - Y. In addition, in the main part of the book pages 9 -10, 12 - 13, 22 - 23, 28 - 29, 34 - 37, 40 - 41, 46 - 53, 61 - 62, 84 - 87, 94 - 95, 102 - 103, 110 - 111, 120 - 121, 182 - 183, 186 - 189, 192 - 193 and 200 - 201 are also missing. Page 186/187 can be found at the back of the book, between the last page and the back cover. In addition, the majority of pages 12/13, 34/35, 66/67, 74/75, 90/91 and148/149 have been cut out with scissors. |
