April 10th Attends St. Pauls Church. In the evening he reads the lesson.
April 11th Leaves Hotel to board the Steamer "S.S. Asia". A rough journey, at one point in the journey a chief officer pulls him back as a wave would have swept him overboard.
April 12th "S.S. Asia" drops anchor in harbour off Syracause. Arrives onshore and goes to the Victoria Hotel. Visits Church of Saint Maria del Pilero. Drives to Temple of Diana in Vico San Paulo. Later goes to Orecchio di Dionisio. This is a cavern in the Rock which has echoing properties. Visits the ruins of Teatro Greco in Neapolis. Next he goes to the Ampitheatre. Visits the Church of San Giovanni. Examines the Crypt of San Marcion which is under the Church. Visits Tomba di Archemdisa. In the afternoon goes to the Fountain of Arethusa.
April 13th Goes to the photographers and purchases various views of the ruins in Syracuse. Goes to the Museum and describes and draws some of the pottery. Takes a trip in the afternoon to Fortress of Euryalus. Drives back and goes to the Octo di Buonovia to see the Bagno di Venero.
April 14th Goes to the railway station and boards train, the line goes along the coast. Train stops at; Aci Castello, Augusta, Brucoli, Agnone, Lentini, Valsavavoja, Passo Martino, Bicocca finally arriving at Catania and he takes omnibus to Hotel Grand Bretagne. Takes a drive in the afternoon to the outskirts of the town to get a good view of Mount Etna which he describes and draws. Visits Duomo or Cathedral of St. Agatha. Drives to the monastry of San Nichola now used as a picture gallery and a Museum.
April 15th Goes on train, stops for a few moments at Aci Reale which is a town. Stops at the ancient town of Taormina. Arrives in Messina. Sees "a grand procession illustrating the proceedings on Good Friday".
April 16th Visits Duomo then St. Gregorio built in 1542. Describes incident when King of Naples bombarded Messina in 1848. Goes aboard "S.S. Principe Oddone" and starts off in heavy seas.
April 17th In process of crossing Gulf of Saleino. On the Port bow can be clearly seen the Isle of Capri. Arrives in harbour in Naples. "Messrs. Cook's man" takes him to Royal Hotel des Strangers.
April 18th Takes carriage to Pompei where archaeological excavations are in process. Goes on to Hercuilaniueum.
April 19th Visits Grotto of Posilpo. Goes onto Pozzuoli an ancient town. Goes onto ruin of Temple of Serapeum. Visits ruins of Temple of Mercury. Passes Lake of Lucrinus then goes to ruins of Palace of Nero. Goes to village of Baja which has remains relating to Emperor Hadrian. Visits ruins of Temple of Diana and Temple of Venus. Goes on to a castle. Travels along the old Appian way. Visits an Amphitheatre near Pozzuoli.
April 20th Takes carriage to the Muze Mazione (a Museum) and describes being in there for many hours.
April 21st Boards train to Rome. Has a good look at Vesuvius. Describes the vineyards and the cultivation of them. Arrives in Rome and takes the Omnibus to Hotel Marine.
April 22nd Goes to Steam Tramway Station outside Porta St. Lorenzo. Takes carriage to Tivoli and Hadrian's villa. Arrives in Tivoli and examines the ruins of a bridge known as Pons Vopisci built around 1200 BC. Goes to the Temple of Venus and Temple of the Tiburtine Sybil. Drives four to five miles from here to Hadrians Villa whose ruins occupy ten square acres. This is described in great detail. Takes train back.
April 23rd Church of S. Maria in Cosmedin- Piazza Bocca della Verita. Goes to Forum Boarium and describes two temples near there.Walks to New Bridge which is across the Tiber. When going across the Bridge in horse and carriage he describes it as vibrating "very disagreeably". Goes to the Jews quarters. Goes to the Temple of Apolo, portico of Octavia, portico of Phillipus. Goes to the house of St. Paul. Attends service at the Church of St. Pudeutia.
April 24th Goes to All Saints Church and attends service. Enters the Pantheon.
April 25th Goes down to the Foro Romanus, which is various ruins. Afterwards goes to St. Peters.
April 26th Basilica of St. Giovani at the Lateran. Visits Lateran Museum. Museum includes the "Sancta Scala" 28 marble steps which are said to have come from the house of Pilate in Jerusalem. In the afternoon he visits the Arch of Constantine and then Baths of Caracalla which cover a space of some 10 acres.
April 27th Starts journey in a carriage to the valley of the Muses. Visits; Tomb of Scipios, Tomb of Caecelia Metella, goes into the catacombs of S. Caluictus, Tomb of Seneca.
April 28th Goes to the Capitolene Museum.
April 29th Leaves by train for Florence. Describes Vine Plantation. Goes through Chiusa and Arezzo. Arrives at Florence at 2.25pm. Quickly visits Ballisters and Cathedral.
April 30th Goes via Roma to The Pitta Palace. Later on he visits Torre al Garro- Church of St. Minuiato. Sees house where Elizabeth Browning and her brother lived and died.
May 1st Goes to Holy Trinity Church (the Embassy Church). He comments that he believes the present Chaplin is leaning towards the "high Church".
May 2nd Palazzio Vecclio, Palazio Pretoris which was a prison and is now a national Museum. Goes to Santa Croce "the Westminster Abbey of Florence". Taken ill.
May 3rd Stays in bed all day.
May 4th Feels better. Goes for a drive along the Cascine.
May 5th A Doctor visits him and tells him to take great care and to return to England by stages. In the afternoon drives out to the Cemetario Evangelico and sees grave of his young friend Perry who died in 1881. Goes on to visit Certosa Convent.
May 6th Starts by train for Bologna which stops at Pistoja- Baguino del Porretto. Arrives in Bologna and takes omnibus to Hotel Brun. |
