September 16th Takes train from Euston station to Derbyshire. Walks across fields to Wood Lincoln. Goes shooting.
September 17th Visits home of Mr and Mrs C. Royston. Takes train Codnor park to Mansfield. Visits large coal pits. Journeys by coach to Norton. Goes on a tour of a factory. Arrives in Norton and drives through Wellbeck Park.
September 18th Leaves for Wood Lincoln. Drives through part of Sherwood Forest and Mansfield.
September 19th Goes to Codnor Church.
September 20th Visits "Cooks" Hippodrome.
September 21st Goes to Langley Mill.
September 22nd Visits Colliery.
September 23rd Distributes tracts and then goes shooting.
September 24th Goes down a Coal Pit in Ripley.
September 25th Visits Nottingham Castle and Roman Catholic Cathedral, St. Mary's.
September 26th Goes to Heauor Church- Baptist Chapel at Loscoe.
September 27th Visits works of Butterly Co. at Codnor Park.
September 29th Goes to Butterly Co. works.
October 1st Goes to the top of a Church Tower, looks at the surrounding countryside of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
October 2nd At Nottingham Goose Fair.
October 3rd Attends Sunday service at Ironville Church. Walks back and gets lost.
October 4th Goes down Shaft at Maryhea Colliery. Gets bitten by a pit pony. Hears the news that his Uncle Thomas has died.
October 5th Lincoln. Messrs. Flint and Wickes Architects want him to be a general clerk. Takes new lodgings at 79 London road, Leicester.
October 6th Starts job as a clerk with Messrs Flint and Wickes Architects.
October 9th Suffers pains in chest which may stop him working.
October 14th Goes to "Wombwells Managerie".
October 23rd Goes to St. Margautte's Church, Leicester. Stoughton.
October 31st Takes a Sunday School class.
November 3rd Is told that he does not have to carry on the job with Messrs. Flint and Wickes Architects due to his health.
November 7th Goes to Trinity Church. Takes Sunday School Class.
November 10th Witnesses the floods suffered by Leicester.
November 13th Leaves job with Messrs Flint and Wickes Architects. Takes train back to London.
November 16th Helps to fix scaffold to view procession of the late Duke (Wellington).
November 18th Views procession. Walks along Fleet Street and the Strand. Saves a woman from being crushed by the crowds.
1854
September 4th Gives a brief account of what he has done in the preceding period; fixing machinery in the Royal Panopticon in Leicester Square (March 1853 - January 1854). Hurt his hand in an incident in this job. A family member died and he attended the funeral in Kensal Green Cemetery. Studying for College (January - July 1854). From July to August 1854 takes vessel from Dublin Street Wharf to Southampton then on to Plymouth for a week, then on to Princes Town Dartmoor for a week. Later goes back to Plymouth for a month. On August 8th 1854 he goes to Liverpool by steam to visit Chas. Royston at the Southen Hospital. Goes with his cousin Emma to Carsington to see his family. "This day Monday September 4th begun a new era in my life". This is due to him receiving a note from Mr Dobin of Dartmoor relating to St. Bee's College. This note offered to lend him a sum of money to start him in College.
September 5th Travels around London buying books.
September 6th Says goodbye to his parents and leaves on train from Euston to Liverpool. Stays the night in the American Hotel.
September 7th Takes train from Liverpool to Carlisle then from Carlisle to Whiteham. Takes omnibus from station to St. Bee's college.
September 8th First day at college- is examined and then has first series of lectures. Gets his cap and gown from college.
September 9th Goes to Whiteham and buys several books.
September 16th Worried as he has not received rest of funds.
September 18th Receives rest of funds.
September 29th Makes several attempts at swimming.
September 30th Walks to Whitehaven.
October 1st Walks to Sandwith.
October 2nd Finds out that he can swim pretty well.
October 4th Goes to Whitehaven in search of part of his luggage.
October 12th Goes to Whitehaven.
October 15th Goes to Sunday Schools but finds them closed due to Scarlet fever.
October 21st Walks around rocks which are at St. Bee's head.
October 22nd In the evening he goes to Sandwith.
November 8th Notes holiday he took on November 3rd to Calder Abbey- he had to go in his gown as he did not ask permisson to go without it.
November 23rd Recieves a list of work for next term and a list of books.
November 25th Recieves a copy of the "Times" which states that a battle was fought at Inkerman in the Crimea on the 5th of November.
November 26th Sunday Schools now open. Out of 47 Children seven are dead from scarlet fever and 27 are lying ill.
November 27th Takes exams, Ecclestical History and answers four out of the nine questions. Also takes Tomline? and answers seven out of eight questions.
November 28th Takes exams, Harmony of the Gospels in Greek and answers twelve out of fourteen questions. Also takes Grotius exam and answers four out of eight.
November 30th Vessel "Perseverance" 200 tons from Workington is blown onto the sands overnight. Takes exam Bible History and answers seven out of nine questions.
December 1st Goes to see vessel "Perserverence" that has grounded on the sands. Takes exam on "Paley" and answers 15 out of 18 questions.
December 2nd Second "Tomline" exam and answers eight out of eight questions. The "Perseverence" which ran aground is now nearly completely dismantled. Describes scarlet fever still affecting the population.
