The partial collapse of a section of Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives' reading room ceiling took place over-night on Thursday 14 January and was discovered by staff the next morning, Friday 15 January 2016. The reading room was immediately closed from that date and subsequently there are no reading room visitor sign-in sheets from mid January - end February 2016 inclusive. From 1 March - 19 September 2016 (inclusive) an interim arrangement was in place whereby those wishing to undertake research using the collections could visit to look at material in Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives' Education Room, on certain days/times and by prior appointment only. Initially visitors could request to look at archive material only (due to lack of access to much of the library collections, which were stored in the damaged reading room), ordered in advance of their visit, however, at later stages of the closure it was possible for staff to access and make available some of the library collections too.
The reading room re-opened to the public with a return to normal opening hours/service on: Tuesday 20 September 2016. |
