| AdminHistory | The parochial school at Shadwell was established in 1696, making it one of the oldest parochial schools in London. The original school house was built upon ground belonging to the estate of the Honourable Thomas Bowes held by him on long lease from the Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral. By 1819 the school house had fallen into disrepair and had become uninhabitable but by 1837 it had been rebuilt in the churchyard. At that date the schools accommodated 45 boys and 35 girls. In 1890 the schools were closed owing partly to their insanitary condition and and partly to the impossibility of adapting the old buildings to comply with the requirements of the Education Department.
A new scheme for the charity for the school was created in 1892 known as the St. Paul Shadwell Educational Trust. The scheme directed that the annual income of the Charity should be applied in the advancement of the education of children resident in the parish by providing prizes or rewards, payments for tuition at public elementary schools, and exhibitions (i.e. allowances) for any place of education at a higher level than elementary. The Charity was still functioning after 1956 (when the volume described below ends) but approaches to the Charities Commission suggest that is no longer opperational. |
