The photographs of the festival event include speakers and other performers on stage, crowds enjoying the sunshine, tents with information on EMEP and other organisations, food, drink and merchandise outlets and other tents hosting games and activities.
The photographs of Brick Lane depict crowds on a sunny day eating, drinking and visiting stalls, including people seated outside restaurants. Extra outdoor seating denotes a special event catering to a wider number of visitors than would visit Brick Lane on an average day. The Seven Stars pub on Brick closed in 2002. It is visible in some of the photographs as dis-used, boarded-up premises. One person is advertising the 'newly opened Invitation' Restaurant, 49 Hanbury Street which began in summer 2005.
An evaluation of the event states: ''the 11th annual Brick Lane Festival was organised by the Ethnic Minority Enterprise Project (EMEP) and held on 10 September 2006. An estimated 65,000 people attended the event. As in previous years, the festival featured stalls and restaurant tables outside on pedestrianised Brick Lane and surrounding streets, as well as a music stage, more food and craft stalls, and a childrens funfair in Allen Gardens. It also included the I Love Brick Lane Fashion Show, held at the Atlantis Gallery in the old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, and a variety of fringe events staged by local venues and businesses to coincide with the Festival. Brick Lane Festival marks the beginning of the fortnight-long Banglatown Curry Festival (10-24 September 2006), in which many of the Brick Lane restaurants participated.' |
