| Description | The City and Spitalfields School of Art was founded in Spitalfields in 1842 when it was known as the Spitalfields School of Design and was originally intended for those engaged in silk weaving. A trade directory for 1848 shows it to have been at 37, Crispin Street. By 1866 it had moved to 12, White Lion Street, Norton Folgate. In 1873 it moved again this time to the newly-erected buildings of the Bishopsgate Ward Schools and parish hall in Primrose/Skinner Street. It would seem that it is for this reason that these records have survived among the records of the Central Foundation School, though the school was under the general control of the Commitee of the Bishopsgate Schools. It was at this time that the name of the school was changed to the City and Spitalfields School of Art. By 1881 it had become the City School of Art. In 1882 it became incorporated with the City and Guilds of London Institute. A trade directory of 1889 shows it still to have been at Primrose Street, but what happened to it when the Bishopsgate Schools moved out of this site in that year is not known. |
