| AdminHistory | The Bethnal Green Trades Council was set up in 1907 and in 1918 affiliated to the Labour Party to become The Bethnal Green Trades Council and Central (or Borough) Labour Party. In 1919 the Socialists were successful in the borough council elections, gaining 24 seats to the Progressives' six and from this date until 1928 Bethnal Green was governed by an alliance of Labour and Communists. Disunity began to set in however in the early 1920s following the decision of the national executive of the Labour party to refuse the Communist Party to affiliate. This led to tensions between the Borough Labour Party and the divisional labour parties of North East and South West Bethnal Green. In the borough elections of 1928 two sets of Labour candidates were put up in all four wards, representing the right and the left wing. As a result the Liberals captured every one of the thirty seats. |
