| Description | Abstract of title of the devisees in trust of the late David Laing esq to property in and near Ratcliff Highway, St. George-in-the-East: Pennington Street, Artichoke Hill, Ratcliff Highway and Johns Hill.
Recites Lease and Release of 1791 (in turn reciting Lease and Release of 1788) concerning 2 houses on the north side of Pennington Street and 3 houses on the east side of Artichoke Hill ('formerly called Essex Street'), occupied by Francis Ewer, carpenter; 4 houses on the west side of Johns Hill, occupied by ---- Carr, Eleanor Bell and John Philpot; and 12 houses on the south side of Ratcliff Highway (nos. 37 and 38 occupied by Joseph Jolland, grocer, nos. 29,30,31,32 and 33 occupied by Thomas Rhoades, Mary Farrier, William Farrington, Benjamin Sayer and Richard Porter, and 5 others lately occupied by John Bristow, engine maker, deceased).
Also recites various other deeds, including the will of David Laing (died 21 Oct. 1822, will proved in P.C.C., 6 Nov. 1822), by which he made the following bequests:
(a) To his wife Ann Laing, £500 p.a.
(b) To his son David Laing [of Hatton Garden, surveyor and architect], 3 houses on Artichoke Hill (on lease to John Miles), the White Hart in Pennington Street, and 45 Ratcliff Highway (occupied by James Whitehead).
(c) To his son George Laing, nos. 37 and 38 Ratcliff Highway (occupied by Mesdames Jolland) and no. 30 Ratcliff Highway (on lease to John Davis).
(d) To his son Henry Laing [Revd. Henry Laing of Clapham, Doctor of Laws], a house on Johns Hill (occupied by Mr.Hetherington), and nos. 29 and 30 Ratcliff Highway (one of which houses on lease to Mr. Fox, cheesemonger).
(e) To his son John Laing [Of Great Tower Street, cork merchant], a house on Ratcliff Highway (occupied by Mary Bristowe) and a house on Johns Hill (occupied by Mr.Thompson).
(f) To his sons Thomas [also of Great Tower Street, cork merchant], Henry and John in trust for his daughter Ann the wife of John Webb, 3 houses in Johns Hill (on lease to Thomas Botterill), the Crooked Billet in Ratcliff Highway (on lease to Messrs. Goodwin & Co, brewers), and no.31 Ratcliff Highway (occupied by John Turk, baker). |
