| AdminHistory | Alfred Gilbert was born in Whitechurch Lane in Whitechapel and educated at the Red Coat School. He served with the Royal Engineers during WW1. Gilbert lived at Mocatta House in Bethnal Green for 44 years. He worked all his life in the newspaper printing industry and was an active trade unionist, being Father of the Chapel at the Sunday Referee and the Sunday Chronicle. He joined the Labour Party in 1926, and was elected as a councillor for Bethnal Green in 1945. Alfred Gilbert died in 1954. |
