| Description | Portfolio of original artworks by Cornelius McCarthy. Included are sketches and paintings on paper and part of a sketch book with no binding or cover.
The following additional information about the contents was established at a meeting with the depositor, Stan Lloyd and Terry Cowley (fellow artist and friend of Cornelius McCarthy) on 25 March 2019.
The portfolio includes:
- some early works, for instance, works dated 1960 and one which was thought to be 1960;
- some artwork which has been created on the back of typed RAF forms, Cornelius was in the RAF from Feb 1954 - Oct 1955 (when he was demobbed) so that dates the artwork created on the back of these forms to the mid 1950s;
- some artwork from the 1980s;
- artwork created in various mediums;
- pen & ink drawing of St. George- in-the East Church at a time when the church was being restored in the 1950s;
- drawings which have been created on pages originally used for other purposes, for instance on the reverse of one is text for Cornelius' and Alec's 30th Anniversary party (1990);
- A drawing of Cornelius' studio in Willow End. Willow End was Cornelius and Alec's home in the Fens, Norfolk;
- some portraits (e.g. one portrait of the painter Colin Ward);
- some designs (e.g. design for a Christmas card for Quest - catholic gay support organisation, 1991 and a design for Welle Manor Hall - Upwell, which was near to where Cornelius and Alec lived in Norfolk);
- Alec Ayres features as a figure in one sketch;
- Bacchanalia figures feature in some of the works;
- Peter Dobson's writing is on the back of one of the images 'CMcC archive';
- inserted pages (e.g. S41 is in Cornelius writing). |
