May 4th Finds out exam results "only two from the bottom". Leaves for Carlisle, walks around town and meets Mr Simpson a curate who shows him around Schools. Takes train back to London.
May 5th Visits Southern and Toxteth Hospital, Parliament Street. Goes on board the "celebrated" clipper "Donald Mckay" 4,500 tons. Meets Charles Royston and helps in dressing "out-door" patients of Southern and Toxteth Hospital. Goes across Mersey to Birkenhead.
May 6th Helps Charles Royston in Hospital. Goes to church in Parliament Street. Walks around the docks. Sees exploded shells brought as ballast from Sebastapol.
May 7th Takes train to Birmingham. From there he goes on to Bristol. Views Gloucester Cathedral, sees remains of Iron Bridge which had been knocked down by a steam barge. Goes to the "Saracen's Head" hotel.
May 8th Boards Mail train which goes through; Exeter, Exmouth, Torquay and Tay Bridge. Arrives in Plymouth. Walks to Stoke to see Mr Cuerton.
May 9th Visits Davenport Dockyard.
May 10th Walks to Coach office in Old Town Street. Leaves by Coach for Roborough rocks. Walks across mountains to Prince Town, a distance of seven miles, to go to Revd. J. Dobie.
May 11th Goes over the prisons where Revd. Dobie preaches.
May 12th Visits prisons. Walks to Hessara Down and Tor.
May 13th Hears a Mr Batchelor preach in the prison chapel and describes him as being "little better then an infidel".

May 21st Goes to view the body of the "famous Tom Provis" a confidence trickster who has died in prison. Takes mail-cart to Tavistock and then coach to Plymouth and home to Mr Cuerton.
May 22nd - 25th Unwell.
May 26th Goes with Lieutenant Rybot to see Russian prisoners at Davenport some 750 of them are there. Describes those from Bomarsund as being "very indifferent kind of soldiers" whereas the prisoners from Sebastopol are described as being "a very fine set of fellows". Buys puzzle from one of the prisoners.
May 27th Attends service at Trinity church, St. Eldad's Place. Describes ministers "bowing and scraping before the communion table" which makes him feel "quite disgusted".
May 28th Goes with friends to large round Bay around the Raine Head. Takes boat across to Mount Edgecombe and then walks the remaining distance.
May 29th - 31st Unwell.
June 1st Goes down to the Hoe and then onto Plymouth and Davenport. Goes to Rosenthal's exhibition, describes what he sees there as being "very common-place."
June 2nd Goes around Plymouth and market.
June 3rd Visits Dockyard church.
June 4th Sees men constructing railway which when completed will run to Penzance. Starts to experience discomfort with his jaw.
June 5th Face has badly swollen a surgeon visits him and cuts gum and cheek from jaw.
June 12th Face is now much better.
June 16th Walks to the "North Corner" of Plymouth Dockyard and takes steamboat to Saltash. Sees the new magazine being built by the government.
June 17th Goes to Stoke Church. Feels disgusted with the service.
June 18th In Plymouth hears of unsuccessful assault taking place upon the Redan and Malakoff towers (Crimea).
June 20th Goes to the Hoe breakwater to fish.
June 21st Goes onboard the "Brunswick" bound for Portsmouth. Views the wreck of the "Ajax". Arrives in Torquay. Later he leaves Torquay on board "Brunswick" and steams southward along the coast of Portland. Arrives in Southampton. Leaves for Portsmouth and arrives off Common Hand some two hours later. Lands in boat and goes over dockyard and sees his Uncle Nicholas who takes him over the "Marlboro" 131 guns which when launched will be the largest ship afloat. Sees the new royal yacht. Boards train for London which goes via Brighton. Arrives home in Delemere Crescent and has tea with his parents.
June 23rd - 28th Studying.
June 29th Receives a note from Revd. J. Dobie offering a curacy in Stockport. Goes to the Model Prisons. Has a conversation with Mrs Kingsmill who believes the vacancy would not suit him.
June 30th - July 10th Studying.
July 11th A man going by the name of "Fitzcosta" keeps bothering him. After "Fitzcosta" creates a disturbance at his home he is taken away by police.
July 12th Decides not to press charges against "Fitzcosta". Meets "my dear Lucy" at Euston Square Station.
July 13th - 22nd Studying but has Lucy for company.
July 23rd Goes to zoological gardens in Regents Park with Lucy. Describes many changes happen since his last visit.
July 24th - August 9th Studying and company of Lucy.
August 10th Travels by rail to Stepney Station to visit Mr Umney at Shadwell.
August 11th - 13th "Nothing of any monument transpired".
August 14th Goes to Crystal Palace at Sydenham. Walks through the building and sees the large Palm tree there. His cousin Henry Mugridge and wife called to see him after arriving from Shields in vessel lying off Commercial Docks.
August 15th - 23rd Spends last few days preparing for trip to the North.
August 24th Goes with Lucy and Peter Royston to Oxford Street and Davies Street. Goes to Varleys and buys 1lb of tobacco for his friend Cholmely. Takes omnibus to the City, calls at Kendries for "Wheatly" or "Com" prayer book also for Cholmely. Goes to Websters in Lombard Street then to railway station in Lombard Street and takes train to Caledonian Road. Goes to the Model Prisons. Talks to Mr Kingsmill about curacy in Manchester. Later he travels back to Delemere Crescent.
August 25th Packs up boxes in preparation for trip.
August 26th Attends the Westbourne Schools. Has tea with Lucy and Clara Hammond at Westbourne Villas.
August 27th Leaves by Great Northern Railway for Leeds. Stays in "Golden Lion" Inn. Looks at a bill that asks for payment to enter a church. Takes train Leeds - Northampton. Meets his friend Cholemley. Takes train back to Leeds.
August 28th Leaves by mail train for Morecambe Bay. Takes boat from Morecambe to Piel. Goes to Broughton, changes there for St. Bee's. Back at work at St. Bee's.
August 30th Takes paper on the six papers of Grotius.
September 1st Takes two exams; Latin composition and "Visa Voce".
September 2nd Feeling home sick.
September 6th Walks around St. Bee's Head.
September 8th Has some trouble with his Latin composition.
September 10th Finds that he can now swim nearly 20 yards.
September 11th Hears that south side of Sebastapol has fallen to the allies. The whole college wants to celebrate this. Goes with friends to Lowe's Water. They take some boats and row to end of the lake. Starts to ascend one of the mountains on the western side of the lake. Returns home and goes to bed after walking some 26 miles and rowing seven miles.
September 13th Learns to float on his back while out swimming.
September 15th Finds that he is top of a list decided by his fellow students as a reader "I only wish it could be said of my other work".
September 16th After lectures he walks around rocks, climbs some cliffs and comes back via the "Tomline" hill.
September 18th Letter from Lucy. Walks with friends to farm in Cleator Lane.
September 20th Sees Cholmely and they set off on a journey. Walks over "Gillfoot " mountain, through Cleator and on to Lamplugh. Views "Blake Fell". Goes to Crummock Water and stays there for dinner. Walks down the south side of the lake to Scale Force. Starts to ascend "Red Pike" and reaches the top in about an hour. Sees Emmerdale Lake. Rescues a sheep that appears lost. Walks down to a farmhouse and has tea. Goes past "Dent Fell". Goes back through Cleator and returns to college after walking some 37 miles.
September 21st Lectures. Feeling the effects of yesterdays journey. Writes to Lucy and fears her father will not allow marriage "and unless he does it appears almost impossible we can ever be united as I must have some money to prepare things".
September 22nd Is worried about his eyes because of amount of reading he is doing by candlelight.
September 23rd Attends service at church and spends rest of day with friends.
September 24th Attends lectures.
September 25th Attends lectures. Receives note from Lucy who is afraid to tell her father of their engagement. Takes part in a race on the beach.

September 30th Today is appointed as thanksgiving for the victories of the allies and for the capture of Sebastapol. Attends church service.

November 5th Announces that today is the anniversary of the battle of Inkerman. Describes the grammar school having twenty flags attached to its pinnacles and towers in celebration of this event. Procession takes place to mark this anniversary. Climbs a cliff near St. Bee's Head.

November 21st Attends church and lectures. Reads in the "Times" that Lord Palmerston has been offered the post of Colonial Secretary to Sir Sidney Herbert which he has turned down. Also reads that the Emperor of Austria has agreed to a "concordat" with the pope and lists demands that have to be met by Austria which he now claims is a "priest-ridden country".
November 22nd Last lectures for the term. Walks with Cholmely towards Nethertown. Receives circulars relating to the Lake Huron mission sent to him by Mrs Kingsmill. Writes to Lucy.
November 23rd Climbs cliff near St. Bee's Head. Receives reply to his letter from Lucy.
November 24th Takes exams in Latin and Greek composition.
November 25th Goes to church. Does some college work.
November 26th Takes exams on Ecclesiastical history and "Proctor". The exam on "Proctor" is interrupted by a student having a fit whom he helps but he has problems remembering his answers when he returns.
November 27th Takes exam on Dicatessaron.
November 28th Sits exam on Hebrews.
November 29th Takes exam on Pearson on the creed. Walks over the top of the mountains to Fleswick Bay.
November 30th Sits paper on the Acts.
December 1st Packs up some of his books. Travels to Whitehaven with Cholmely. Is seriously thinking of going to work in Lake Huron, but is still unsure over what to do.
December 2nd Attends church service. Receives note from Reuben. Goes to tea with Goodwin.
December 3rd Takes exam on the Bible which is the last examination for the term.
December 4th Is pleased with the results of the exams. Journeys from Whitehaven to Carlisle. Leaves Carlisle by express train and arrives in Edinburgh where Macpherson is waiting for him. Stays with MacPherson's parents.
December 5th In Edinburgh. Goes to 12 Royal Exchange which is MacPhersons office.
December 6th Goes to Royal Exchange and Law Courts. Examined under the role of Lithography. Has dinner with Mr Deane.
December 7th Visits Royal Exchange. Goes to Law Courts. Visits a photographic establishment.
December 8th Goes with Mr Alex MacPherson to dine at a Mr Deane's. He describes dinner being spoilt by "an old artist" who drinks so much that he cannot stand by the end of the night.
December 9th Goes with Mr Alex MacPherson to a Episcopal Church in Edinburgh. Visits Leith parish Church.
December 10th Goes to St. Giles Cathedral. There are two churches within the building, one of which contains the pew used by Queen of Scots.
December 11th Goes to the Royal Exchange. Looks after the office for a few hours. Takes a walk to Leith.

Arrives in lodgings some three hours late due to bad weather.
January 30th Back at St. Bee's. Exam on Grotius "I was very unsuccessful with this paper". Walks to Sandwith.

February 2nd Course work. Receives note from Lucy.
February 3rd Attends church. Goes with friend Chase to Sandwith to dine. Also has tea with him and attends a little church.

February 5th Public holiday throughout this and neighbouring villages on account of opening the Church after its restoration in the cruciform style. Gives a history of the Church and its restoration. (Whitehaven?) There is a procession to mark this event followed by lunch. Sunday School children given a treat of tea and cake. Later they are entertained with a magic lantern.
February 6th Makes reference to the fact that "it is just 10 years today since poor Elizabeth Foretice/ Foretin was buried". Writes to Lucy.

Arrives at the "Pheasant Inn" at the foot of Basseuthwaite Water. Goes to Village of Peel Wyke. After dining he starts again for Keswick. Sees Greta hall. It is here that the Poet Robert Southey lived. Reaches Keswick and stays at the "Queens Head Inn".
February 19th Travels from Keswick to Derwent water. Passes "Lodore Inn" and "Grange Bridge" Enters Borrowdale which is five miles from Keswick. Has lunch in the little village of Rosthwaite. Goes to chapel of Borrowdale. Crosses Seatoller Bridge which is eight miles from Keswick. Reaches the end of Buttermere at a farm called Gatescarth. Arrives at the Fish Inn. Reaches Emmerdale. Goes back to where he is lodging after walking thirty-one miles.
February 20th- 21st Attends lectures.
February 22nd Attends lectures. Talks to Mr Woodhouse about a curacy in Wolverhampton. The stipend is £60 per annum. (takes it?). Goes to the national schools.

March 4th Attends lectures. Receives letter regarding curacy.

March 6th Attends lectures. Receives note from Mr F. Smith a surgeon at Dartmoor stating there will be a vacancy for an assistant chaplain there.

March 11th Ascends a mountain by going up the pony path. Goes to "Westdale Head" and has breakfast in a farmhouse. Starts off for "Wastwater". Sees a clear view of Scawfell Pike. Starts for Seascale. Passes through Gosforth. Arrives at Seascale having walked fifteen miles in four and a half hours. Leaves for St. Bees. Does college work.
March 12th Attends lectures. Writes to Lucy. Receives note from Thos. Smith at Leicester informing him of a curacy with Revd. C. Lee of Bilston, Staffordshire.

March 26th Starts to ascend Scawfell Pike which he climbs after one and half hours. Sees a cairn of stones on top which Sappers and Miners left in 1826. Descends via the face of "Lingmell". Does the journey in less time than it had been done before. After lunch starts for "Sty Head Pass". Goes down to Borrowdale. Passes "Bowder Stone". Arrives in Keswick very tired after walking twenty three miles. Stays at the "Queen's Head Inn".
March 27th Starts journey to Cockermouth. Takes train from Cockermouth to Whitehaven. Travels back to St. Bees. Recieves a letter from Mr Gould telling him that he should try for a curacy of more value.
March 28th Receives a letter from Dr. Meara at Toronto offering him £150 per annum with residence. Goes to see Mr Kingmill in London for advise. Leaves by train and arrives in Carlisle. Walks around the town and looks over the cathedral which is being repaired and restored. Leaves Carlisle by train for London.
March 29th In London. Walks from Euston Square to Delemere Crescent. Goes to see Lucy. Visits Mr Kingsmill who recommends he declines offer from Dr Meara.
March 30th At the Lock Chapel.
March 31st Calls at the Pastoral aid society's office in Fleet Street. Has lunch with his mother. Visits Lucy. Calls upon Revd. J. Bowen at Great Ormond Street who gives him a excellent character reference for Mr Lee.
April 1st Calls upon Revd. Thos. Garnier, Upper Harley Street who signs his testimonial. Visits his parents and Lucy.
April 2nd Goes to the City. Calls upon Revd. A. M. Campbell who refuses to sign his testimonial. Spends the afternoon with Lucy.
April 3rd Journeys to the City. Receives note from Mr Lee stating that the Pastoral Aid Society had rejected Mr Perry, who Mr Lee had nominated and that he was now nominating him. Goes to get his testimonials. Bids farewell to Lucy and parents.
April 4th Takes cab to Euston Square. Boards early morning train for Wolverhampton. Takes train from Wolverhampton to Bilston and then walks to the vicarage. Meets Mr Lee the vicar. Walks around the parish. Describes the town as being rather smoky on account of the number of factories.
April 5th Takes train to Wolverhampton. At Wolverhampton he takes train for Milnthorpe. At Milnthorpe he takes coach to Ulverstone. Leaves Ulverstone for St Bees.
April 6th Attends Church.

April 8th Attends lectures. Walks around "Fleswick Bay". Encounters problems with people signing his testimonial. Walks to Whitehaven.

May 14th Takes train to Lichfield. Goes to the Verger of Lichfield Cathedral who shows him and McGrath lodgings in Birt street. He lodges with a Mrs Shorthouse.

June 30th Visits Bradley schools where "John Wesley formerly held his meetings". Walks to Capponfield and after dining goes over Mrs Bagnall's works. Visits the boys and girls school and reading rooms and other parts of the factory.
July 1st Goes to the cottage lecture at Bradley. Goes to the schools and then around the district visiting the sick. Several ask him to help them physically, "I find my knowledge of surgery and medicine very useful". deals with one case which is an attempted suicide.
July 2nd Visits houses in Temple street. Attends cottage lecture at Hall fields. Told by Mr Bowen that he has not made himself "sufficiently amicable with the young ladies in the school and especially with regard to his daughters." So they will not teach any longer in the schools. Receives note from Lucy.
July 3rd Takes Service and visits several families.
July 4th Walks with Mr Lee to Goldthom Hill.
July 5th Kenworthy a St. Bee's student calls to see him. Receives a note from Reuben.
July 6th Attends Sunday Schools.
July 7th Attends meeting of St. Mary's Guild at the school room, "rather a stormy meeting".
July 8th Visits several sick people and walks with Mr Lee to Wolverhampton. Later in the day he goes back to Wolverhampton by train with Mr Wells. Has to walk back home as he misses train.
July 9th Goes to Hall Fields with Mr Lee and gives a cottage lecture. Visits Mr John Baldwin at the "Ellowes" which is a mansion.
July 10th Visits several families. Writes to Lucy.
July 11th Has a discussion concerning "the best means of preventing drunkenness amongst the colliers".

July 15th Visits several sick people,. Attends dinner of the 4th Lodge of Good-Fellows. Goes with Mr Lee and Mr J. Lewis to West Bromwich to a sunday school treat at Mr Willmores. 750 children and 350 visitors and teachers are present. Plays football with the children and damages one of his shoes in the process.
July 16th In West Bromwich. Goes with Mr Lee to visit several pew holders.
July 17th Visits schools and gives the third and fourth classes a Bible lecture. Writes to Lucy and Thos. Smith. Visits the poor.
July 18th Walks over to Darlston to visit Revd. Jas. Loy curate of the parish church. Looks around the church. and "Mr Fisk's old church". Walks to Wednersbury and looks around the old church.
July 20th Goes to Sunday Schools. Reads prayers at St. Marys in the morning.
July 21st Delivers a cottage lecture at Bradley schools.
July 22nd Goes on journey with teachers to Euville "about 60 persons started in a large van and an omnibus each drawn by four horses". Arrives at park and looks around old church. Visits Earl of Stamford's gardens. Sees the Earl playing cricket in his own three acre ground.
July 23rd Delivers exposition at the cottage lecture in Hall Fields. Goes with Mr and Mrs Lee to Capponfield to a public tea meeting in aid of the missionary society.
July 24th Visits pew -holders. Has some problems over remarks made the evening before.

July 26th Attends cemetry for a funeral. Receives notes from Lucy and Reuben.

July 28th Invited to dine with the 4th Lodge of Good-Fellows. Finds that no preparation has been made and has to wait for a seat, "and the meat they gave us was most execrable- we got quite disgusted and left at 3 o' clock". Walks over to Darlaston to Mr White's School treat.

August 5th Walks down to Wood Lincoln to see Christopher Royston (brother of Lucy). Meets him at Codnor Castle, "he had some misgivings that I felt offended with him I assumed him of the contrary".
August 6th Takes leave of Lucy and journeys to Ambergate station. Leaves for Derby and rides in the same carriage as Sir Joseph Paxton and has a long "chat" with him. Leaves Derby and arrives at Wednesbury. Walks part of the way to Bilston and gets a lift in a Dog-cart the rest of the way. Goes with Mr Lee to hear a lecture on "Health and Happiness".
August 7th Visits several pew-holders. Goes to Miss Sparrow's Ironworks with her brother who is the manager. Views the whole process of manufacturing Hoop and Railway Iron.

August 12th Procession. Those taking part include boys and girls of the Bradley school. At Ettingshall the younger children are put into a wagon the procession then carries on to Goldthorn where there are various amusements. One of the teachers on the trip has a series of fits and he attends to them. Returns home from trip at 1am "very tired".
August 13th Cottage lecture at Hall Fields. Visits some of the pew-holders and some of the sick.
August 17th Conducts a marriage service. Attends schools. Takes the whole service at St. Luke's Church.

July 7th Goes to Hampton Court.

July 10th Visits East India Cos. Museum. Obtains a ticket to see the works of Messrs. Glasse and Elliotts (manufacturers of the Atlantic cable). Takes steamboat to Greenwich and then boat to see ship that is used to lay the cable, the "Agamemnon".
July 13th Plans to go abroad. Looks at the possibility of going to Geneva and back in seven days.
July 16th Starts journey - goes by steam vessel for Dieppe. "This was the first time I had seen a Foreign town." Stays in the Hotel de L'Europe. Goes on from Dieppe to Rouen. Visits Cathedral and Church of St. Onen. Starts on his journey to Paris, arrives there at 11pm and stays at the Hotel du Louve.
July 17th Describes the elaborate decoration of Hotel. Takes train to Mouterreau then stops at Toumere. Stops at Dijon station then at Macon. Takes omnibus to the Hotel de L' Europe.
July 18th Goes aboard railway boat. Train goes through mountains and through villages, Rossillon and Seyssel. Starts journey from Seyssel to Geneva. Encounters some problems on journey. Arrives at St. Martin and rounds the hill and comes in full view of Geneva and the "celebrated lake". Goes to the Hotel des Bergues.
July 20th Leaves Geneva for Chamouni. Enters the Alps. Comes into sight of Mont Blanc. Arrives at Hotel de Loudres et d' Angleterre. Buys some Swiss carvings.

July 31st - August 1st Attends exhibition and committees.
August 2nd "Mr Lee was again away". Takes the whole service. Has tea with Mrs Kendrick.
August 3rd - 8th Attends exhibition. Visits the Sick. Assists in packing paintings [ from exhibition].
August 9th Takes service at Ocker Hill. Baptizes five infants. Has tea with Mrs Kendrick.
August 10th -15th "Time spent as usual in visiting the sick, attending meetings of the Institute and preparing sermon for Sunday".
August 16th Sermons preached for the Pastoral Aid Society.
August 17th - 29th "Time spent as usual". Recieves invitation which he accepts from Sir Benjamin Heywood to spend a few days with him and preach at his church.
August 30th Attends Sunday schools. Takes Bible class. Takes the whole duty in the afternoon.
August 31st - September 5th "Nothing of any consequence transpired".
September 6th Attends Sunday Schools. Takes Bible class. Has tea with Mrs Kendrick and supper with the Dunnings.
September 10th Has tea at Mr Chambers. Takes the whole service as Mr Lee goes out.
September 11th Goes to Wolverhampton with Mrs Cooper and her sister. Calls upon Miss Campion. Returns to Bradley.
September 12th Mets Reuben at railway station and goes to vicarage. With Reuben he journeys to Wolverhampton and buys some dress boots. Goes with Reuben from Wolverhampton to Manchester via Stafford and the North Stafford Railway. Takes a cab to Claremount and calls upon Sir Benjamin Heywood and is introduced to Miss Heywood.
September 13th Visits St. John's, Miles Platting, Manchester with Sir Benjamin and his daughter. Sir Benjamin Heywood built the church and is properitor of the church. Preaches in the church. Goes back to Claremount. Goes to church at Claremount and hears curate preach in such a style "that a very many felt much inclined to go to sleep". Returns to Sir Benjamin's home for dinner and supper.
September 14th Goes back to Manchester by trap and then to the Manchester exhibition, which has on view Cardinal Wolsey's hat. Goes to Salford station and then to the Borough jail. Goes to his friend Cholmely's house.
September 15th Goes from Manchester then London Road Station to Ashbourne then onto Parwich? where his Aunt lives.
September 16th Goes to Bradbourne.
September 17th Goes to Ashbourne, Burton then Vicarage.
September 21st Gives lecture at Baldwin's Ironworks.
September 22nd Gives lecture at Baldwin's Ironworks. Visits the Moorcroft Schools.
September 23rd Gives lecture at Baldwin's Ironworks. Bilston Institute.
September 24th -28th Gives lectures at Baldwin's Ironworks.
September 29th Goes to Wolverhampton.
September 30th Gives lecture at Bradley and at Baldwin's Ironworks.
October 2nd Goes to Wolverhampton. Goes to see the Times correspondent Russell's lecture on the war in the Crimea.
October 3rd Gives lecture at Baldwin's Ironworks.

October 7th By Royal proclamation a day of fasting , humiliation and prayer on account of mutiny of Sepoy troops in India.
October 8th Goes to Birmingham. Visits Dentist who puts creosote in his bad teeth.
October 10th Goes to Wolverhampton.
October 11th Walks to the "Hollies" mansion with a Mr Walker, a very rich man, who tells him that he has brought the Parish Church and all of Middleton in Shropshire. |
