AdminHistoryWalk East is a not-for-profit social enterprise, based in Tower Hamlets, with a focus on cultural and heritage education and publishing activities.

Run by Graham Barker, Director, Walk East CIC [Community Interest Company] was incorporated on 10 June 2010. Registered office: The Old Bakery, 4 Stepney Green.

According to Walk East's website (source: http://www.walkeast.org/index.html. Accessed 12/02/2026):

'On a walk, you can discover more about your local area, take a proactive approach to managing your health and wellbeing, and enjoy shared social time with friends, family and colleagues. Walking can give you an all-round lift, for mind, body and soul.

At Walk East we aim to share the pleasures and benefits of walking – for discovery, health and wellbeing, and community – with East London residents and visitors. Some of our recent projects include leading photo-walk courses, organising workplace walks, managing weekly health walks, and creating newspaper and video walks.

Each project is tailor-made to meet the priorities and needs of the community groups and clubs, schools, council and NHS departments, private companies and charitable bodies that work with us. And we design our projects to be sustainable, to have a lasting impact on attitudes towards walking in East London.'

Projects include:

'Terraces, Tenements and Tower Blocks' project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. According to the Walk East website:

'Over ten weeks in April-June 2013, a group of local residents came together to investigate the housing heritage of Bethnal Green. We used old maps, photos, trade directories and other historical resources to explore how the local area has developed and who has lived here over the years. And we set out – cameras in hand – to photograph the architecture, streetscapes and today’s residents. Throughout the project, we shared our stories and photos on a project blog: www.bethnalgreeninfocus.org'.

'Project coordinators: Graham Barker is a journalist and walk guide. He writes ‘Walk of the Month’ for East End Life, manages the Tower Hamlets health walk programme, and develops community projects spanning photography, heritage, journalism and cookery. Natalie Clarke runs photography workshops, socials and masterclasses at the Photo School, and is an executive coach, with a particular interest in using photography and visual literacy in her practice.'

Project participants:
Fatima Ali, Alan Dann, Alan Drew, Mike Elston, Alan Fraser, Jackie Gooding, Christine Hall, Maggie Hewitt, Jay Hudson, Marion Kerr, Peter Lanes, Gary Marsh, Valerie Sheekey, Matthew Shelley, Christine Thomas and Anne Walker.

The project produced a booklet 'Terraces, Tenements and Tower Blocks. A self-guided walk around the housing heritage of Bethnal Green'.
