AdminHistory | Self-described as 'non-political and unsectarian', the Union of Stepney Ratepayers was formed by local businessmen in 1905. The Union aimed to promote the 'real' interests of ratepayers in Stepney and 'the exercise of a direct and indirect influence upon the local government of the Borough, and to improve the administration of both central and local public authorities by': reducing the rates as much as possible; seeking a revision of the system of compounding rates; and seeking 'to remove the anomaly of large associated ratepayers or limited liability companies being entirely without voting power or representation on local public bodies whilst paying rates.' Membership was open to all ratepayers in Stepney.
Between 1947 and 1951, the organisation was known as the Stepney Municipal Alliance, and from 1952 to 1962 as the Stepney Chamber of Commerce. |
