AdminHistoryThe origins of the Shoreditch and Bethnal Green District Nursing Association can be traced back to 1888 when a Miss Wells, a nurse from Bloomsbury began to visit the area. In the following year she moved into lodgings in Nichols Square and established a nurses' home. These premises were considerably enlarged in 1900. The object of the Association was to provide trained nurses for the sick in their own homes.

In 1948 the London County Council (as the responsible local authority) delegated the organisation and provision of the service of district nursing to the voluntary district nursing associations. The Association, which was responsible for the provision of district nursing in the boroughs of Bethnal Green and Shoreditch, remained an independent organisation, controlled and managed by a voluntary committee but the LCC undertook to provide 90% of approved expenses of the service. In 1956 the Association moved out of Nichols Square and into LCC premises at 210, Kingsland Road.

Due to local government reorganisation the Association was wound up in 1965, the Shoreditch side of operations being continued by the Health Service of the London Borough of Hackney, and the Bethnal Green side by the East London Nursing Society which continued its work of district nursing by arrangement with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
