AdminHistory | In June 1955, Douglas M. Davis was a passenger on the S.S. Iberia. He suggested to the captain a meeting of Rotarians which took place. At the meeting he promised on behalf of the Rotary Club of Stepney to present the S.S. Iberia with a 'Rotary Signature Book' to help members from different Rotary clubs to meet. It is noted in the volume that 'Stepney has always had particular links with the sea' with many seamen buried at St. Dunstan parish church 'known throughout the world as "the church of the high seas"'. A further note states: 'The "Iberia" was taken to the breaker's yard in the Summer of 1972'.
The Rotary Club of Stepney was affiliated to Rotary International. Rotary is a 'global network of neighbours, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.' As of 2022, The Rotary Club of Tower Hamlets was one of more than 33,000 Rotary clubs worldwide. |
