AdminHistory | Prospect Walk Allotments Association is a voluntary organisation which was founded by a group of local people in Bethnal Green in the late 1970s. The establishment and continued existence of the Association is a direct consequence of the decision by Tower Hamlets Council to convert a piece of bomb-damaged land that had been used for temporary housing in the post-war period for the use of allotments. The last temporary dwelling was removed in about 1976 and the site stood vacant for the next few years; the idea for allotments was put forward by local residents during consultations which were taking place for the Council's development plan for East Bethnal Green.
Most of the work to convert the site physically was undertaken by the early members of the Association, although some help was provided by the Council and by the Greater London Council. In keeping with this ethos of voluntarism, the Association has always been run by its own members with no outside input: there are three officers - a chairman, secretary and treasurer - who are elected annually and run things on a day-to-day basis. |
CustodialHistory | Record-keeping has been patchy in the Association's history, but it was good in the 1980s and 1990s. |
