| AdminHistory | 'Johns Place Tenants and Residents Association (TRA) was formed in 2021 during the covid pandemic, as residents came together to provide the first collective voice since the estate was originally built in the early 1970s. In addition to addressing immediate challenges and resident needs, it was agreed that a central ambition would be the establishment of a community mural to represent our shared history and diverse communities represented in Whitechapel. We secured funding from the National Lottery Heritage Foundation for the project at the start of 2024.
Our project is to create a new mural at the heart of Whitechapel representing the rich heritage of our diverse neighbourhood.
Our project team led by Johns Place Tenants and Residents Association, working in partnership with Walk East and Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives is leading a series of history workshops, guided walks, and research sessions to inform the content, design and style of the final mural.
Once designed, the mural will be painted on Sidney Street, near Sidney Square and Clark Street, covering a flank wall and bringing colour and life to a previously blank canvas.
A huge THANK YOU to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for enabling this project; we really appreciate your support.'
