AdminHistory | Bethnal Green Literary Society began as the Friends' Hall Literary Society in February 1906, taking its name from its meeting place in Barnett Grove. Its object was the mutual improvement of its members by means of readings, literary evenings, lectures and debates. It left the Friends' Hall in November 1911 following a dispute regarding the Unitarian beliefs of Arthur Hadley, the Society's president. Subsequent venues were the "Travellers Rest" in Bethnal Green Road, Bethnal Green Town Hall, and Victoria Hall, Approach Road. In May 1916, with numbers dwindling and remaining members removed from the neighbourhood, a decision was reached to suspend the activities of the Society until the end of the War. It presumably never reformed. |
