AdminHistory | William Benson (originally Benjamin), Thorne, born 3 January 1878 in Islington, began his library career at the St.Bride Institute in the City; on 1 December 1902 he took charge of the Bromley Library in Brunswick Road, Bromley, and spent over 40 years as a librarian in the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar, becoming Deputy Librarian of the Borough in 1928 and Borough Librarian in 1934, until his retirement in 1942. He was made an Honorary Fellow of the Library Association in 1938, having been a member of the Association since 1899; he was also the first President (in 1908) of the Library Assistants' Association, of which he also became an Honorary Fellow. He edited the Library Assistant for some years. |
