'In 1977, I was a geography undergraduate at the London School of Economics. As part of the degree we were asked to conduct an individual field study of an area looking at a particular aspect of Human Geography. My study was of the Isle of Dogs. I had never visited the area before and only spent a few days (including my 21st birthday) in the area, looking at land use and related issues. Reading my report today, I see that I had little optimism for the area. Little did I know at the time that I would spend much of my adult life living in Tower Hamlets (Bethnal Green and then Bow) and much of my working life on the Isle of Dogs (1991-1998 in Harbour Exchange, and 1999-2016 in Canary Wharf). By then much of the Island had changed beyond recognition.' |
