AdminHistoryAccording to the journal, Richard Newman was married twice. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Mason on 19 July 1765, who died on 4 September 1784. He remarried on 21 October 1787 to Elizabeth Reynolds, who died on 18 May 1792. In the journal, Newman references occasions when his second wife, Elizabeth Reynolds, disappeared for nights at a time, drinking with other men. In 1788 they moved to 16 King Street, Mile End New Town.

Newman appears to have worked as a teacher and musician; whilst living in Mile End New Town (1779-1783), Newman's other source of income was through lodgers boarding at the house.
