AdminHistoryDerek Morris, historian and retired geophysicist, has researched, written and lectured on 18th century Stepney since 1993. His published titles include "Mile End Old Town, 1741 - 1790"(1st ed.2002; 2nd ed. 2007), "Wapping 1600-1800"(2009) and "Whitechapel 1600-1800" (2011).
As a student, Morris read Geology at Queen Mary College. During this period, he lived in St Margaret's House, Bethnal Green, an 18th Century merchant's house. In c.1988, Morris discovered that in the 1760's his forebears had lived on the north side of Mile End Road. The resulting body of research into his own ancestry led eventually to the publication of "Mile End Old Town, 1741-1790".
Derek continued research and giving talks up to April 2024. He passed away on 14 July 2024.
