AdminHistoryEdward "Ted" Maynard was born in Stepney in 1917 and attended Senrab Street School. he left school aged fourteen and went to work at an opticians making spectacles. Having become an active member of the Methodist East End Mission he studied to become a local preacher at the Cliff Theological College in Derbyshire. he subsequently preached in many Methodist churches in London's East End. During the Second World War he registered as a Conscientious Objector and in 1943 he went overseas with the Church Army to run recreational facilities for the troops.

After the War Ted worked for Strakers, a family firm with a string of retail stationery outlets throughout London. In 1950 he married Dilys Alison Davies and in 1951 they moved to Plaistow. Subsequently his work with Strakers led them to move to Bermondsey and the Tooting. Following the takeover of the firm by the Rymans chain he moved back to the East End, becoming warden of the boys' hostel attached to the Whitechapel Methodist Mission. He took on some preaching appointments at Latimer Congregational Church in Mile End and in 1974, in his mid-50s became the pastor there. In 1976 he was ordained. He also became part-time minister at Bruce Road United Reformed Church in Bromley-by-Bow.

He resigned from Latimer in 1981 and subsequently pastored Congregational churches in Ipswich and Chigwell Row. He died in 2001. [See P/MAY/11 for a detailed biographical note]
