AdminHistory | Dr Andrew Lewis was engaged to research and write a history of the Parmiter's Estate Charity in January 1995 by the Trustees; he was awarded this paid commission after being interviewed along with one other candidate. The original brief outlined by the Trustees was to produce an approximately 10,000-word illustrated history of the Charity. Research began in February 1995 and was completed in May.
The research was based on the extensive manuscript and published materials held at Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives, the London Metropolitan Archives and the Charity Commission. The author was also given access to the later twentieth-century records of the Charity, at that point still in possession of the Clerk to the Trustees; at the time of writing (23/10/20), the current whereabouts of those records is unknown. The pictures and illustrations identified for possible inclusion in the work as initially projected were never used, but information on them may be found in this collection.
A draft of the history was ready by September 1995 and submitted to the Trustees for approval, but the book was not published by the Parmiter's Foundation (and then in somewhat different form from what was envisaged by the author) until 1999. The headmaster of Parmiter's School Mr Brian Coulshed was credited as a co-author, and the book was officially launched at a celebratory dinner in October of that year. A copy of the book is available at Tower Hamlets Local History Library and Archives (classmark 370.3). |
