AdminHistoryClara Ellen Grant (1867-1949) was Honorary Warden and Secretary of Fern Street Settlement, Bromley-by-Bow.
She was born in Wiltshire and brought up at Frome, Somerset. She was educated at Salisbury Diocesan Training College and, coming to London, began work as a teacher in Wapping. She founded The Fern Street Settlement in 1907.

She initiated the popular 'farthing bundle' ceremony on Saturday mornings, when children small enough to pass through an arch would receive a parcel of toys, picture books etc., for a farthing.
The inscription on the wooden arch read; 'Enter all ye children small, None may come who are too tall'.
She is buried in Tower Hamlets Cemetery.
She was commemorated by Clara Grant Primary School, Knapp Street and Clara Grant House, Mellish Street.

Clara Grant wrote 'Farthing Bundles' 1929, with two thousand print 1930 and second edition 1931; and 'From 'me' to 'we'', 1940.
