| AdminHistory | Mark Adams (born c1956) worked as a law centre worker, community activist and local government officer/regeneration co-ordinator in Tower Hamlets.
He first came to Tower Hamlets in Spring 1978 on an anti-Nazi League demonstration, which was a national demonstration against the rise of the National Front. At the time he was a student, studying at Cardiff, Wales training as a town planner.
He then moved to and lived in Tower Hamlets from 1980-1993, first in Spitalfields, then Mile End.
Mark Adams worked in the borough from 1979-1993 and 1996-2002 as follows:
1979-1986: Worker at Spitalfields Housing and Planning Rights Service (SHAPRS), Spitalfields Centre, 192 Hanbury Street. The service was funded by the Greater London Council (GLC) initiative called the Spitalfields Neighbourhood Committee. SHAPRS had Bengali people at its centre, run by and employing Bengali staff including social workers serving the local community. Ahmed Fakhruddin was a founding member. - one of the first initiatives was the Tower Hamlets Homeless Families Campaign (HFS) around 1979-1980 - to support homeless Bengali families living in unsecured buildings in and around Brick Lane and put into hotels by the council around Finsbury Park. At one point the Campaign took over the Homeless Persons Unit in Commercial Road to run the unit and make demands for improvements. - another was to tackle the worst housing around Brick Lane and Hanbury Street including Great Eastern Buildings at the north end of Brick Lane. All had been declared official slum clearance areas under the Housing Act. SHAPRS closed down in 1986 with the abolition of the GLC.
1983: involved in the Bow and Poplar Labour Party.
From 1986: After closure of SHARPS, he worked at St Mary's Centre which covered the ward around Myrdle Street and Parfett Street. The centre was set up mainly by Saiful Alam and Tassaduq Ahmed. 1994: co-authored 'Tower Hamlets the race for power : an investigation into the racist housing policies of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets' by Gary Hewett and Mark Adams, 1994. Published by Tower Hamlets Unison. 1994-1995: Director of Holloway Tenant Co-operative Housing Association Limited 1997-2001: London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH) working as Central Stepney SRB [Single Regeneration Bid] Co-Ordinator. He was based in the Urban Regeneration Section of LBTH, Tower Hamlets Town Hall, Mulberry Place.
He later became Regeneration Manager in South Kilburn (working there in 2006). |
