AdminHistory | The firm of estate agents, Jones, Son and Day, was founded by William Jones in White Horse Road, Stepney, in 1828. He purchased 586, Commercial Road (4 Brunswick Cottages) in 1863 for the sum of £600. He later took into partnership his son, Harry, who, surviving his Father, took into partnership in 1901, Mr. P. H. Day.
The new partnership specialised as licensed property valuers and they were the main Agents to Taylor Walker and Company whose Brewery was in Limehouse and closed in 1958. They carried out work under the rating and valuation acts, auctioneering, stocktaking for licensed premises, accountancy and general estate agency.
Mr. P. H. Day was elected a member of the Auctioneers' Institute (later the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors).
In about 1910 Mr. Day took into partnership his son, Percy, and Mr. Charles East. This partnership was dissolved in 1923 and the business continued in the sole proprietorship of Mr. C. East. In 1925 the latter took into partnership his son, John, who subsequently became a member of the Auctioneers' Institute. The firm continued to manage many private properties in the Stepney/Limehouse area as well as undertake public house brokering.
Mr. D. H. Goldsworthy joined the firm in 1939, being made a partner in 1959 and becoming the sole proprietor in 1965. During the latter years there was considerable turmoil in the brewing industry and the firm became more and more involved in accountancy work.
The office finally closed in May 1991 having been trading in Stepney for 163 years, 128 years in the same premises.
