Thomas Blundell appears in the trade directory of 1855 as a coppersmith in the West India Dock Road, apparently continuing the business of Jonathan Downton, brass founder, patent pump, fire engine and water closet manufacturer who can be traced in directories from 1843. In 1870 the directory entry appears as "Blundell, Thomas and Sons (late Jonathan Downton) coppersmiths, brassfounders, pump, fire engine and watercloset manufacturers, The London Copper and Brass Works". By 1903 the business was, in addition, referring to itself as brewers' engineers. In the 1920s the business included T. Albert Crompton and Co. Ltd and from the 1930s was known as Blundells and T. Albert Crompton and Co.
