Envelope 28: Photograph of East London ''Pearlies''in Poplar Envelope labelled '28' and entitled 'East London ''Pearlies'' - Poplar.' Contains one black and white photograph of a group outdoors, focusing on men dressed in pearly king outfits. At the centre of the image there is a girl and boy (he is wearing a pearly outfit) seated on a decorated cart which is being led by a donkey. The clock tower of East India Dock gates is visible in the background. There are some numbers/calculations on the reverse of the image which suggests it was previously used for publication/display purposes. The text 'East London ''Pearlies'' and 'Lax of Poplar' is also annotated on the reverse of the photograph. There are illustrations and photographs in Reverend Lax's book 'Lax of Poplar' but this image is not one of them. However, Reverend Lax was known for his outdoors preaching at the East India Docks so the photograph may relate to one of his outdoors sermons there. c. 1910
