Typed transcript of Minutes of the Wapping District Charity School (from 1817 known as the East London Institute) for Educating and Clothing the Children of Poor Catholics) The minutes contain many details of boys admitted to, and discharged from, the School (usually giving their name, age, street of residence and sometimes names of parents). Between 42 and 60 boys attended the school at any one time during the period. The entry for 6 Dec 1807 records that the schoolmaster, Mr Kelly, had "2 girls at the school, which appears to be highly improper; he is therefore ordered for the future not to admit any girls to the schol, and to discharge those he now has, immediately". The copy appears to be incomplete as the final page (no. 133) end in mid-sentence. It is thought that the original minutes have not survived having been destroyed by enemy action in World War II (see 'The Story of Catholic Wapping' by Vincent Worley). [1807-1821]
