Illustrated travel diary Includes Map of Algiers, menu from a restaurant and some small photographs. February 16th Takes train from Holborn to Dover. At Dover pier goes onboard the "Calais Dovre" a mail steamer. Describes being a good traveller and not suffering from seasickness. Arrives in Calais harbour and takes train to Marseilles and arrives in Paris. Takes a cab to Lyons railway station. Encounters problems due to bad weather and becomes stuck on the train. February 17th Arrives in Lyon, stops at Avignon for breakfast, arrives and stops in Marseilles for twenty minutes, stops at Toulon and then arrives at Cannes at 3.45 p.m. Goes to Hotel Metropole and finds that he has no baggage. February 18th Goes to Cannes to see childrens carnival. Takes a cab to visit the tomb of Lord Brougham. February 19th Goes to Cannes by the omnibus and obtains his portmanteau and bag. Visits Gaze's office to learn of journey to Algiers. February 20th Sees French fleet of five ironclads in bay. Spends the afternoon and evening with the Countess of Donoughmore. February 21st Attends service at St. George's church. Takes a walk for about two miles down the Nice road. February 22nd Problems with the bad weather. Travels by omnibus to Cannes station, boards train and arrives in Marseilles at 11 p.m. Goes to the Grand Hotel de Marseilles. February 23rd Goes to the Zoological Gardens, park and picture gallery. Meets up with an interpreter at Hotel and drives to the "S.S. Marechal Bugraud" and starts journey. February 24th Lands at Harbour at Algiers. Goes to the Hotel des Etranges. February 25th Goes to racecourse. At racecourse were "Mr and Mrs Singer of sewing machine celebrity". Describes the dress of the Arabs. February 26th Walks down the Rene de la Republique to the Post Office. Looks at the old Spanish Fort built in the 1530's. Visits the Fish market, Jardin Marengo and Mosque Sidi abd-er Rahman. Goes into Mosque of Djama el Kebir only as far as the yard. Goes to new Mosque Djama el Djedid. Visits Roman Catholic Cathedral, Archbishops Palace. Goes through the old Arab City. Takes omnibus to station beyond the Champ de Mars and walks to the Jardin d'essai which is a garden. February 27th Buys some photographs. Visits Museum and Library in Rue d'Etat Major. Describes relic of San Geronimo. Takes omnibus to Fort Bab Aznouu. There he sees Arab cavalry, Artillery and a regiment of Zouaves the 5th Regiment of Chasseurs d' Africa. Describes this as a show of French military strength. February 28th Walks to the English Church of the Holy Trinity. Goes to the Lighthouse at Fort Penon. Describes battle involving Lord Exmouth on the 27th August 1816. February 29th Goes to Mosque Sidi abd-er-Rahman eth - Thalebi which overlooks Jardin Marengo. Visits tomb of Sidi abd-er-Rahman. Takes tram to suburb Mustapha Superior. Sees the palace of the Governor. Takes Omnibus to Colomne Voirol which is a column put up in remembrance of General Voirol. Then he goes on to Village of Birmandries which is an Arab village. From there he goes on to the entrance of the Jardin d' Essai. When back at Hotel he writes to French Commandant for permission to see Casbah. March 1st Day of the great carnival. Receives permission from Commandant and visits Casbah. Returns through the Old Town. Describes elaborate steps erected by the French. Describes collision between two steamers in the harbour, the "Stella Maris" and the "Felix Touache". The "Stella Maris" was sunk. March 2nd Describes and draws the sea and fishing boats. Visits Bab el Asuau and purchases some photographs. He also buys a rifle, that reputably belonged to a Moorish chief who led a rebellion, it is 200 years old, and a Arabic sword which was reportedly used to decapitate people. Purchases railway tickets for Blida-Tleuiceu and Oran. March 3rd Leaves Hotel des Etrangers, drives to railway station and boards train on journey to Blidau. Goes across great plain called Metijah. Arrives in the town of Boufarik and describes its Lemon and Orange tree orchards. Goes past the town of Beui and its obelisk monument to Sergeant Blaudau and twenty-five soldiers who were besieged by 300 mounted Arabs. Arrives at Blidau at 11.45 a.m. and takes the Hotel d' Orient Omnibus which has to drive two miles to reach the town. In the afternoon drives to the Gorge of the River Chiffa describing the road through the Gorge as "a splendid piece of military engineering". Drives on to the Auberge du Ruisseau des Singes before turning back. March 4th Takes early morning train, goes through the Great Plains of Chelif. Describes ruins of Roman bridge and draws them. Stops at the little village of St. Cyrieu des Attafs. Sees the remains of a Roman camp named as Djebel Temoulga and the Roman station known as Tigauda Municipium. Stops at Sainte Barbe and changes trains. Boards train for Tlemceu where he arrives and goes to the Hotel de France. March 5th Starts exploring the city of Tlemceu. Describes the history of this old Moorish city. A guide takes him to see Tomb of Sidi Ibrahim. Goes to the Mosque of Sidi Ahmed Bel Hassan el Ghomari founded 1296-1297. He then goes to the chief Mosque Djamaia-el-Kebir in the Place d'algier. Visits museum. Goes through Arab city "with its narrow steep lanes, courts and alleys". Goes to fish and vegetable market. Describes the dress of children and "we saw a group of them playing with stones the same game as our children at Whitechapel". Leaves by train, stops at Sidi bel Abbes, St. Barbe du Tlelat, and arrives at Oran at 10.20 takes omnibus to Hotel Continental. March 6th Goes to Huguenot church. Describes Oran and its history. March 7th Walks around town. March 8th Takes omnibus to Railway station, drawing some plants that he sees. Describes old buildings, including Koubba's which are old tombs. Reaches Algiers and goes to hotel. March 9th Calls in at an english chemist as he is feeling unwell. Goes for a walk around the harbour. March 10th Goes to Messrs. Cook and Sons for tickets to Tunis. March 11th Walks to railway station. Starts train journey; passes La Maison Carrie, L'Alma, Belle Foutaine, Gorge of the Isser River, Omar-Dra-el-Mizan, Gorge called Porta de Fer, Bordj-boll-Arredj arrives in Setif and takes omnibus to Hotel de France. March 12th Boards early morning train which is going to Constantine. Arrives there and describes history of the city. Walks around his hotel at the end of the Rue Nationale. Crosses Palace de la Breeche and describes seeing a French travelling dentist. Walks down the Rue Nationale and then over to El Kantara. Describes an Arab funeral. March 13th Goes to the Cathedral of Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs in the Palace du Palais. Describes another two Arab funerals. Draws an Arab Well. March 14th Visits Sidi Rachid, on top of this cliff is the remains of a Roman tower. Describes a memorial inscription to Saints Marcus and Jacobus who "suffered martyrdom here A.D. 289". He sees 33 Eagles and 37 Storks. Goes to a Arab and French cemetery. March 15th Goes to Place de Palid then across Place de la Breiche. Looks at the Rock of the Kasba. Goes through the Arab quarter- examines Gateway of Bab-el-Djabia. Goes to a Roman Aquaduct and then walks right around the town. March 16th Goes to the Railway station in the early morning. Starts journey; at Bou Nouara he sees a Megalithic Necropolis. Stops at Thaya Ortaya reports that there is reportedly a large cavern here with 53 Roman inscriptions within it although he personally does not see it.
